FRIDAY NIGHT CRUZ' IN

LouieFest Warm Up Report....

On the Friday Night just before the weekend we call LouieFest 2007, a time honored tradition of a Car and Bike CRUZ' IN was held, hosted by the Demonos Car Club of Tacoma. I was there with the camera and caught some great shots and footage of the Cruz' In, an interview wit the Demonos and a little bit of the LouieFest setup of the Main and the Rock stage areas.

The Demonos really showed the spirit of LouieFest, by volunteering their time and efforts to gather a crowd to get the music festival started just right.  In fact, I saw a lot of volunteers, everywhere, putting up tents, plugging in the power, getting things ready for the weekend show.

DAY ONE : SATURDAY

Okay gang....
I'm back from the LouieFest.....
LouieFest Day One Report....

August 18th, I was there.  My friend from San Francisco was there, the documentary crew was there, the bands started and vendors open the tent doors for food, drink and networking.

The LouieFest Friday Night Cruz' In was cool enough. Perfect for the Saturday LouieFest schedule to begin. I had checked the band roster.  Made some notes. Stephen and Hope who are a part of the documentary crew, started covering the music festival grounds in all directions with a mission to see and listen and take video and photos of what we call LouieFest.

Like anyone who comes to these events, this first shout-out is to  thank the staff, all volunteers, that's a fact, who put it together and make it work...  in fact they are the reason that the LouieFest music festival happens at all.  First things first... a big thank you from all of us for everything you do.

It's late in the evening and I need to get to LouieFest Day Two early.... so I'll keep things brief and fill in the blanks later.  I'll tell of three news items right now... the Bike Show,  some pictures of the bands and performers, and a special plug for Starstruck, all girl band.

The Saturday Bike Show was awesome.  The categories for the awards didn't do justice to the amount of work, labor, and love these guys and gals put into their two-wheel road warriors.

Straight forward then, here's the awards given...

Best Chopped Custom, Best In Show, Most Chrome, Biggest Rear Tire and Sick Pick (by two votes).... Tacoma Larry Frye

Best Stock, People's Choice... Tacoma Keri Burnham

Best Rat Bike... Spanaway David Aspland

Best Cruiser, Best American Motorcycle...Tacoma Sunday Pfufz

Best Paint, Best Flames... Tacoma Dolly Barraugh

Best Unfinished, Biggest Fork Rake...Tacoma Larry Frye

Best British Motorcycle... Tacoma Mary Mitchal

Oldest In Show... Tacoma Garrett Baker (complete with an original Thompson Machine Gun scabbard)

Checkout the band schedule (in the GALLERY page) for Saturday.  I was at the main stage to catch K.K Ryder and then Blind Blonde Driving.  Hope was visiting the jazz and the rock stages. Stephen was at the Bike Show and Americana stage.

We all got together to see 'Starstuck'. An all girl group, ages 10 to 11, doing some excellent cover songs like "Louie Louie" and a lot of their own, original material.
They got some additional ink at the News Tribune.

They're young, They're good,  And you what, they're the tip of the iceberg...  there are a lot of kids, young folks, who are filled with talent.  I have to say LouieFest fulfills that promise to our young musicians, just getting started, to find an audience that knows music and accepts them as one of our own.

This is the last picture

Yes it did... it rained. In the Northwest, we actually play in the rain you know.  But then it came down harder and we all pitched in to get the equipment safe, the musicians safe, and as the crowd gathered in the beer garden, music row and the vendors tents, we waited for a short time for everything to clear up.....  and it did !.!.!  The music festival picked up where we left off...  the bands started playing on all four stages.... Me ? I went for a hot dog and some freedom fries.

Then just as we were coming to the final musical acts, a gusher came in from the coast.  I was at the main stage this time, Barry Curtis and Steve Peterson (both of the Kingsmen) had to end their set early, with the Leon Hendrix band in the full-tilt ready mode, to end Saturday's program in complete style... and when the word came.... you could hear the rain drops hitting the microphone... or was that a tear....

No worries...  tomorrow is LouieFest Day Two

  FESTIVAL REPORT

DAY TWO : SUNDAY

LouieFest Rocks.....
LouieFest Day Two Report....

Day two of LouieFest started with clearing skies although a bit of  rain hit the cymbals in the early hours.  Nothing to fret about, just a regular Northwest weekend.  Stage two was drenched fairly good, but that did not stop the bands from playing... and that included our 1000 Guitar Event players

There are many photos to scan and video footage to watch and while we are waiting for additional shots by friends and fans to arrive...  here are some of the pictures from the first two cameras.

Rain-Or-Shine
That was the motto of the crowd, bands, and 1000 Guitar Players.  Ya just got to love it when people, like you and me, make music together... and dance.

We just got a YouTube video sent to us by a fan of the 'Hammers' playing in the rain... it's Louie Louie... ohh yaaa !
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezPq5N6amDw

We end right here... FOR THE MOMENT...

There is much work to do to gather the photos and edit the video together, but we will get everything to you as it is completed.

Title: I guess He didn't get the memo.

Guess not.

Just the same, I had a great time. I know the turn out was disappointing because of the weather, especially given all the work you and others did to set up stages, vendors, power, etc.

But just so you know -- as I sat in my car practicing Louie Louie prior to the big event, a family stopped by and asked me (a complete beginner) about the chords. Turns out the Dad and son were both playing in the 1000+ event, and like me, were beginners. The daughter played classical piano! (Couldn't play Louie Louie, though.)

And when the time came to perform the 1000+ guitars, the parking lot which was mostly empty at noon was now jammed full. On cue, the clouds parted and the rain stopped. In the baseball field just outside 2nd base I was surrounded by families, young people, and old guys like me just trying to bang out the song. Not ten feet away, a 75-year old man and his 15-year old grand daughter (I think) were jamming on a bass and lead guitar. A simple three-chord song was responsible of for all this magic. Amazing!

A funny thing happened to me during the performance. I was playing an acoustic guitar, and of course, it was completely drowned out by all the amplified stuff. (Which is fine, because my ham-handed mistakes couldn't be heard.) So I started doing something I have never done before -- and that is singing Louie Louie at full voice in public. Of course, it was largely lost in the din, but just the same I felt like something in me was set free. As I played the A, D, and Em chords, and sang those well-known lyrics, I was in some kind of Nirvana. Corny, I know, but there you have it.

All of which is to say "Thank you!" to you and the Wailers and all of the staff and support people who put the event on. You may have been disappointed, but I wasn't. It was a great success for me and for many others around me.

So here is to next year. And if I can help lock in guitarists to nail down the world record, then sign me up!

Best regards,

Drake Bradley, Clinton, WA

Title: Hi Meri

Wanted to drop a note thanking you for all the hard work and sweat you put into LouieFest 2007. Yeah, the rain put a big damper on everything but that doesn't deminish what you and the other special folks involved accomplished.

People like you are so valuable when it comes to helping kids keep their dreams alive. Music is such a diverse yet universal means of communication ... rock, blues, jazz country, etc;...who cares! It all opens doors to somebody's soul.

Hope you hang in...and I bet the weather cooperates next year. Thanks again.
